This page is INCOMPLETE and still missing some important information before it can be used as a resource. Please use the "Discussion" feature above or talk to one of the tutors if you would like to help improve it. Thanks!

This is the content required for an introduction to our metal lathe - reading this does NOT replace the mandatory session with a tutor! It will make it a lot quicker though ;-)

Safety

Dangers

  • rotating chuck
    • can easily catch loose clothing, or hair
  • loose work pieces can be thrown at high speeds
  • small debris can be thrown towards the user
  • cluster of shavings ('rats nests') can be caught by the chuck -> very sharp; quickly rotating object...
  • shavings (especially steel) are very sharp
  • parts of the machine/workpiece can become hot

Before using any delicate or dangerous tool you need to get a personal introduction (Einweisung, Maschinenkurs) from one of our tutors. We have to especially warn the new users of the potential dangers of each tool. Using any tool without meeting its access requirements (as found on the respective hardware page) is against our Werkstattordnung and will jeopardize your insurance coverage in case anything happens!

The wiki pages in this category do not replace the personal session but are written to make sure every introduction contains all the relevant information. They are essential for the tutors but can also be interesting for any Makers who want to read up on a machine in advance of getting their personal introduction.

Of course safety isn't everything - if you are interested in learning about software, technology or craft techniques, check out "seminars".

Currently, we offer the following introductions to our machines:

Page Structure

This might help as a starting point for writing a new introduction page - just copy, paste and fill in the blanks :-) You may find it helpful to include the relevant safety icons!

Please note that the incomplete notice is mandatory for all new instructions. It will be removed by a manager once all managers reviewed and agreed to the introduction.

This is the content required for an introduction to our Introduction for::<TOOL NAME> - reading this does NOT replace the mandatory session with a tutor! It will make it a lot quicker though ;-)

If you are ready for this introduction, please reach out to the following tutors: NAME-HERE

Let's begin! First off, make sure you have read the machine's wiki page and <MANUAL>.
