Project Presentations

Let's take up to 2 × 10 minutes before each plenum to show others what we're working on!

  • Andiarbeit showed his progress with his first (and very challenging) welding project: "tornado torches"
  • Trix presented his CNC milling project: making a personalized gift coin
    • small details are very hard to get right - so many parameters to test, so little time...
    • brass gives better results than the brass-nickel alloy used in 2 € coin centers
    • workholding turned out to be tricky as well: how to achieve perfect alignment, minimum vibrations and no damage to the edges?

If you are interested in talking about your projects, please announce it here and/or via your favorite community channel before the next plenum - and of course, a project page would be perfect!!

Recap of the Last Plenum

  • Repair Café: both events (July & October) went well, the October one (on "World Repair Day") had more visitors than any before - 28 of 57 attempted repairs were successful!
    • two new dates planned for 2024: currently looking at July 20th & October 19th

Topics

New Tools

  • 5 Soldering Kits for events (stored in the office until needed)
    • made possible by "Code Week" and "Meet & Code" funding
    • we also have 5 or 6 Raspberry Pi Pico left over!
    • feel free to request all of this equipment for any new event ideas :-)

Management Update

Johannes, who has been volunteering as tutor and supervisor since the very beginning, is also joining the management team now! *applause*

Heating

Ideas for localized heating have been floating around - requirements:

  • there is no way we can heat the entire space, local solutions are required
  • power source should be electricity or (maybe) gas so we stay safe
  • a timer should be integrated to limit energy costs and make sure no heater runs unattended

collection of rough options:

  • infrared panels on rolling stations?
  • heatable seat cushions in the common room?
  • small "warmth cabin" inside another room?
    • set up a cheap greenhouse?
    • close off the gaming area and add a suspended ceiling?
      • see Trockenbau#Option: Raum im Raum for previous research in this direction
      • curtains instead of a fixed wall would leave the option of keeping the area open during summer
    • apparently, used "Odenwalddecken" are often available cheaply if you deconstruct them yourself
  • isolate the floor (in a selected area)?

Any solution to be pursued further needs detailed cost & effort research - please contribute so we can battle the cold together!

Electronics Bench Johannes & Leo awesome storage improvement to keep the benches tidy!
3D Printers Leo & Kim please report any problems so the patrons have a chance to act! Recently, it seems printers were sometimes left broken and the next unlucky person had to find out the hard way; this can also lead to half-baked repairs... any feedback/thanks?

Kitchen Kim & Johannes the fridge does not refill itself, everyone should do their part please! During winter, we may try to skip the fridge and just put the cash box near the crates under the countertop any feedback/thanks?

This is the place to talk about general improvements etc. - for example:

  • What did I do since the last plenum?
