Wood Lathes

Woodturning - notches by skew chisel.gif
Synonyms: woodturning lathes; DE: Drechselbänke,
Drechselmaschinen
Material: woodturning blanks
Used with: face shield, woodturning tools

Similar (More or Less): metal lathe

We have wood lathes in the wood workshop that can be used as an entry to woodturning - once a community of turning enthusiasts develops and the machines become too weak for more ambitious projects, we can think about replacing them with a professional model.

The "Güde" wood lathe is very simple, but okay for learning how to turn wood.

Caution - Overheats Old Fuses

This lathe may trip an old-fashioned fuse (circuit breaker, Sicherung) when turned off an on repeatedly as every start of the motor draws a lot of power. To prevent this issue, plug the lathe into the "modern" black/white outlet box below the main power Verteiler to the right of the lathe! Please ask a tutor or manager if you're not sure about any of this.

Specs

  • max. workpiece diameter: 320 mm
  • max. workpiece length: 1000 mm
  • spindle speeds: 850 - 1250 - 1750 - 2510 rpm
  • motor: 370 W
  • spindle thread: M18
  • workholding options: drive center (Vielzack-Stirnmitnehmer/"Dornenkrone"), four-jaw chuck, faceplate (wrong thread)

Speed Selection

The lathe can run at various speeds depending on which pulleys are connected by the belt (picture on the housing). Do not put excessive tension on the belt - you'll be very happy about the belt slipping in case you've made a mistake and the tool digs into the workpiece!

Upgrades/Improvements

We have tweaked this machine to improve usability (also see issue #7) :

In addition, these accessories might be interesting in the future:

SAFETY NOTE: Make sure you lock the box with the on/off switch in place before use! DO NOT start the lathe when it can swivel, you may not be able to safely turn it off then and the belt/pulleys are exposed!

Specs

this lathe can be used with a drill chuck!
  • max. workpiece diameter: 254 mm
  • max. workpiece length: 450 mm
  • spindle speeds: 650-3800 rpm (variable)
  • motor: 370 W
  • spindle thread: M33
  • workholding options:
    • headstock: four-jaw chuck
    • tailstock: morse taper - accessories: rotating center, drill chuck

Speed Selection

The D 460F has an electronic speed selection which is regulated by a potentiometer (without scale!) above the on/off switch.

Upgrades/Improvements

Ideas:

  • it would be nice to fix the control box more properly - this should be coordinated with Micha Ba. who is the machine's owner!
  • get/make a faceplate and a drive center for more workholding flexibility
