To use a drill press, you'll need to mount a drill bit that suits your workpiece and securely fasten it with the chuck key.
Safety
- read the manual!
- get a personal introduction by one of the tutors!
- wear personal protection, but never operate the drill press with gloves on!
- don't drill materials with harmful dust!
- make sure there is nobody nearby who might be surprised by a piece of shrapnel flying their way!
- use a machine vise for small workpieces!
- never use a machine vise on top of a wooden board or two wooden boards at the same time (tower rule)!
Fastening Options
- we should get one or two of these drill press locking clamps if they are available around here
- additional tables to mount on the simple "standard" one are probably worth the effort
- inspiration: Stephan Pöhnlein on YouTube
Jigs
Some ideas what we should make for a more efficient/safe use of a drill press:
- V-block for drilling into round or angled things
- vertical clamp (very simple, basically to board with a hinge at one end)

Blacksheep kindly donated a Scheppach DP 16 SL drill press in August 2019.
From a technical point of view, it offers the following:
- Drill mount: 1 - 16 mm (neues Futter)
- Speed:
510800 - 2430 rpm
Drill Speeds
When changing the belt position, unlock the the motor hinge with the screw on the right side. Then move the belt on the pulley that reduces the diameter and afterwards change the belt position on the second pulley (similar to changing the chain on a bike). When the belt is in its final position, it should be level (waagerecht) and have enough slack so the motor can be pushed back and re-locked with the screw.
The slowest speed is currently not available due to a broken pulley!
Depth Stop
The original depth stop collar broke relatively soon, so Patrick designed a 3D printable replacement part.
After several reprints that were broken soon after installation, we removed the stop screw so the collar only holds the safety shield now...
Speed Chart
This chart was specifically created for the speeds that the Scheppach can provide. You can find it taped to the top of the machine.

- Drill bit sizes: 1-16mm (neues Futter)
- Transmission: 16 gear (170-3080rpm)
According to the sign on the machine and this document, the machine has the following (relevant) specs:
Specification | Value |
---|---|
Motor Power | 550 W |
Spindle Travel | 85 mm |
U/min | 170-3080 |
Spindle Taper | MT2 |
Table size | 290 mm × 290 mm |
