Pencils are useful for temporary marks on many materials as they can easily be removed with rubber erasers or sandpaper.
Long, eraser-tipped ones can also be used as push sticks for very small workpieces on the table saw.
Pencils are very cheap and should be nicely engraveable by a laser cutter, how about we make a jig and customize a bunch to give away as "business cards"?
