Wrenches are normally used to fasten hex-head screws or to hold nuts in place when fastening a screw with another wrench or screwdriver.
For the popular bit based tool please have a look at our socket wrench.

Combination wrenches are open on one side and have an angled ring with a double-hex profile on the other side that can improve the grip on hex head screws and nuts. This ring also allows interlocking two of them (or one with something else, see photo) for a longer lever.

Open-End Wrenches

Synonyms: | open-end spanners, free wrenches; DE: Gabelschlüssel, Doppelmaulschlüssel, Schraubenschlüssel |
Type: | hand tool |
Material: | screws, nuts |

"Regular" wrenches. We actually don't have any of these in our workshops because combination wrenches are much easier to hang on the wall!
Adjustable Wrenches
ToolInfoBox Adjustable Wrenches | |
---|---|
Synonyms: | adjustable spanners, shifting spanners, shifters, "crescent wrenches/C-wrenches"; DE: Rollgabelschlüssel, Engländer |
Type: | hand tool |
Material: | screws, nuts |
Location: | wood workshop |
Access Requirements: | read this section |
Similar (More or Less): | open-end wrenches, combination wrenches, socket wrenches |
This tool is a great space-saver when you're not sure which sizes to bring! Use a regular wrench for a nicer fit if you can, it also won't be as head-heavy as the adjustable version...
Pipe Wrench

Synonyms: | Stillson wrench; DE: Rohrzange, "Eckschwede" |
Type: | hand tool |
Material: | soft metal (usually pipes) |
Location: | wood workshop (for now) |
Access Requirements: | read this section |
Similar (More or Less): | pliers |
Pipe wrenches are often confused with tongue-and-groove pliers but are actually very differently constructed.
