| The "Güde" wood lathe is very simple, but okay for learning how to turn wood.
| |
|
| |
| === Caution - Overheats Old Fuses ===
| |
| This lathe may trip an old-fashioned fuse (circuit breaker, Sicherung) when turned off an on repeatedly as every start of the motor draws a lot of power. To prevent this issue, plug the lathe into the "modern" black/white outlet box below the main power Verteiler to the right of the lathe! Please ask a tutor or manager if you're not sure about any of this.

| === Upgrades/Improvements ===
| |
| We have tweaked this machine to improve usability (also see issue #7) :
| |
| * Johannes and Lukas welded two spots onto the tailstock screw so it doesn't turn past its intended blocker anymore (gap was too wide)
| |
| * Patrick made the tool rest rock solid by removing the grub screw that pressed against the vertical rod and drilling a threaded hole into the rod instead
| |
| * Lukas is working on a lathe-mounted disc sander
| |
|
| |
| In addition, these accessories might be interesting in the future:
| |
| * buy (or turn on the metal lathe) an 18 to 33 mm adapter (to match commonly sold accessories like faceplates)
| |
| * buy (or make) a faceplate
| |
| ** can be made like the plate of the disc sander (just much smaller)

We have wood lathes in the wood workshop that can be used as an entry to woodturning - once a community of turning enthusiasts develops and the machines become too weak for more ambitious projects, we can think about replacing them with a professional model.
Tyme Avon
The Tyme Avon is an old, but solidly built lathe that has replaced our flimsy Güde 1000.
Specs
We seem to have the Model ATL301 with 36" (915 mm) between centers and a bed length of 52" (1320 mm).
- max. workpiece diameter (above bed): 280 mm (11")
- max. workpiece diameter (swiveled 90°): 495 mm (19.5")
- max. workpiece diameter (swiveled 180°): 610 mm (24")
- max. workpiece length: 900 mm
- spindle speeds: 470 - 750 - 1150 - 2000 rpm
- motor: 550 W (3/4 hp)
- spindle thread: M25 × 2 mm; internal No. 2 morse taper (MK2)
- workholding options:
- headstock: drive center, faceplate, four-jaw chuck, ...
- tailstock: No. 2 morse taper (MK2) - accessories: rotating centers, our "usual" drill chucks also fit
Speed Selection
The lathe can run at various speeds depending on which pulleys are connected by the belt:
spindle speeds resulting from each belt position
Do not put excessive tension on the belt - you'll be very happy about the belt slipping in case you've made a mistake and the tool digs into the workpiece!
New belts are still sold at store.lathes.co.uk
Accessories
An alternative tool rest for our Tyme Avon
We have two barrels which can be used with the Tyme Avon - we are usually using the right one, since it spins with the workpiece.

Precision Combination Chuck
Spare Parts
Many spare parts can be found via incamachines.com.
The current driving belt is labeled with "190J6 TBA POLY-V 483J6" and "2088".
