Similar (More or Less): | rotary tool |
We have a couple of disc grinders in the metal workshop. For small-scale applications, try using a rotary tool before you whip out this beast.
They can be used to cut or grind metal or stone, depending on the disc used. Cut-off wheels (Trennscheiben) should not be used for grinding and grinding discs (Schruppscheiben) should not be used for cutting as they are primarily reinforced for one of the purposes and could otherwise overheat and break.
Safety
Due to the high amount of sparks generated, it is a good idea to wear a face shield as a second layer over your goggles! In addition, you should put on some gloves and hearing protection before using a disc grinder.
Make sure the disc is securely fastened and spins without an offset before cutting anything! The manual suggests letting it run for a minute without load, only if there is still no increased vibration after that it is safe to use.
Do NOT operate a grinder without its semi-circular collar - it will protect you from a lot of the sparks and shrapnel of the disc (if one breaks on you). Stay away from aluminum unless you bought special discs, it can reportedly clog and overheat regular metal grinding discs up to the point of explosion!
Discs
Be prepared to bring your own discs if you have specific needs! There are usually some leftovers of the basic types:
tool type | use | properties | suggested donation |
metal cut-off wheels (Metall-Trennscheiben) | cutting metals (except aluminum) | 125 × 1.2 mm | 1 €/disc |
metal grinding discs (Metall-Schruppscheiben) | grinding metals (except aluminum) | 125 × 6 mm | 3.50 €/disc |
We also like having some flap discs (Fächerschleifscheiben) around, feel free to leave us some after your project ;-)
