A slicer is a program used to convert 3D files such as STL to G-code that can be interpreted by a 3D printer. In the slicer you choose important parameters such as layer height, wall thickness, support, and print speed. For the 3D printers at the CoMakingSpace we use Slic3r because it's open source and recommended/supported by Prusa Research, "our" brand of printers.
