An impact drill is a type of hammer drill, meaning it has a setting that adds a lengthwise beating motion to the rotating bit, thereby making it capable of driving masonry drill bits.

With this hammering function disabled (and only then), it can also be used with "regular" drill bits or screwdriver bits. Something you should keep in mind though: cordless drills usually have a brake that stops the rotation as soon as you let go of the trigger - this drill will spin out and may drive your screws in too deep, especially if you are working with soft wood!

Need more power? A rotary hammer is similar, but packs a much stronger punch and may require special bit shafts ("SDS"). It can often also chisel without rotation.
