Breadboards are jigs made up of interconnected sockets that can hold and power wires or other electronic components. As they are quite expensive, they are used mainly for prototyping and would be replaced by stripboards, perfboards or printed circuit boards in the final stage of a project.
The outer rows are connected lengthwise and the inner sockets form short rows that are connected across the board.
They are also useful as "vises" for soldering circuit boards onto pin strips!

You can document and tweak your breadboard creations digitally with Fritzing.
