Burnishing is the process of "polishing" and sealing leather edges for a nice look and increased durability. [1]
According to this instructable the key is to sand the edge flat, and then repeatedly apply gum tragacanth and rub the edge with the burnisher.
To prevent "mushrooming" the edge, you should always use a edge beveler first. [2]
