A hatchet is a small axe that can be used for light splitting, but typically won't get you through a proper log.
Do NOT hit the hatchet's head with a hammer use its backside as a hammer! This can bend the hole so the head slides off the handle. [1]
Sharpening is easiest with a belt sander or a handheld sharpening stone (e.g. when you're camping).
Hatchets are also used in some green woodworking techniques.
