Slag Hammer

Type: hammer
Material: metal
Used with: welding transformer
Location: welding area in the metal workshop

A slag hammer (also known as a welder's hammer) is an indispensable specialized tool for removing slag residues and welding debris following shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) or flux-cored arc welding. The slag crust formed during welding protects the weld bead from atmospheric reactions, but it must subsequently be completely chipped away.

Construction and Features:

Dual Striking Faces: The hammerhead typically features a pointed chisel face for corners or fine points, and a flat, elongated chisel face for flat surfaces.

Distinctive Spring Handle: Many models utilize a characteristic, spiral-shaped metal spring handle. This dampens vibrations during striking and protects the hand from fatigue.

Materials: They are generally constructed from robust, hardened tool steel or solid steel to permanently withstand heavy impacts.

Intended Use and Application:

Visibility: Exposing the weld seam enables visual quality inspection for defects such as porosity or lack of fusion.

Multi-pass Welding: Before laying a new weld bead, the old slag must be completely removed to prevent slag inclusions within the metal.

Post-processing: Following rough cleaning with a chipping hammer, the seam is typically further refined using a wire brush.
