Lipping

Synonyms: solid wood edging;
DE: Kantenleisten
Suggested Tools:
Used with: particle board, MDF, plywood
Contains: wood
Similar (More or Less): edge banding

Lipping is similar to edge banding, but much thicker. It can be glued or nailed straight on the edges you want to hide/reinforce, but may also be fitted into a slot for extra strength.

Lipping can be trimmed to the same thickness as the main board, but it may also voluntarily form a "lip" e.g. to keep things from sliding off a shelf.

The material can be bought or cut from suitable pieces of wood with the table saw.

Alternatives

Instead of wood, you may desire colorful or especially durable edges from plastic or even metal for some projects - for example, Lorenz gave his Arcade Machine a special touch with red PVC T-molding.
