Plenum/Meeting minutes/2023-06-14
From CoMakingSpace Wiki
Topics
Topic 0: Show & Tell
previously on slack...
- Idea of doing a short show and tell of projects at the beginning
- problem: Acquisition of presenters -how to solve?
- Mitja: We should just try an open slot and if volunteers are there, let's go
Today's volunteer: Joel - Project:Robot Arm
Topic 1: Gaming Corner
- It's there and beautiful!
- unfortunately the radio signal at the new location is poor, there are random blackouts (loud crashing noise)
Topic 2: New Bandsaw
previously on slack...
- Discussion about getting a new bandsaw ongoing
- Current bandsaw is on long-term loan and not suitable for resawing thick planks
- Need someone to identify a suitable model
- Financial constraints make immediate purchase unlikely
- Gathering interest and willingness to help with funding suggested
- Mention of a potential model: Holzbandsäge MJ14 from paulimot.de
- Mention of another potential model: Premium 12" Bandsaw from recordpower.co.uk
- Suggestion of considering a second-hand bandsaw for cost savings but concerns about maintenance and quality
- Alternative suggestion of building a bandsaw ourselves using a DIY guide from woodgears.ca --> difficult: takes a lot of work and might not be safe/durable in the end!
new option: bundle of machines from the university for 5000 €
- the bandsaw alone (Mössner Rekord 320, 210 mm workpiece height) is worth about 3500 €, a big CNC mill worth >30000 € refurbished
- where to get the money (quick)?!
- betterplace donations! Keno could already prepare a campaign
- kickstarter style campaign with "rewards" like xy laser minutes?
- Privatdarlehen to buy time?
- can we somehow sell some old machines, perhaps via a reseller who will take care of refurbishing? Especially the large CNC mill might be too much for us
- other CNC mill/router are under-used due to difficulty and lack of documentation
- is there enough power (400 V, probably 32 A?)
- big question: how long until we have to decide?
Topic 3: Getting a Plasma Cutter
previously on slack...
- Description of a plasma cutter as a tool for cutting complex geometries out of metal plates
- Cost estimation of a plasma cutter at around 300-400 Euro
- Suggestion of a YouTube video showcasing a mostly printed CNC plasma cutter
- Discussion about the absence of volunteers to maintain the CNC
- Inquiry about the usefulness and price range of a plasma cutter
- Criteria for acquiring new tools discussed, including financing, maintenance, and impact on the space and other tools
- Agreement that a plasma cutter could be considered if the criteria are met
- Previous focus on the welding area before considering a plasma cutter
- Mention of advantages of a plasma cutter for building molds for Precious Plastic
- Suggestion of considering a cored wire welding machine for advantages in the metalworking area
- today's opinion: nice idea, but not a priority
- the welding area is still not usable, which should be taken care of before the next diy machine
- the current machine offer (Topic 2) would probably bind the available resources (money and metalworking experts) if we decide to go for it
Topic 4: Repair Café
Date: Sat July 8th, 14:00-18:00
- we need helpers: organizers (mainly need to know their way around the Space) and/or repairers!
- Ökostadt Rhein-Neckar (main organizer) collects volunteers in this Google Sheet
- Rolf will see whether he can do electric checks again
- other members present are probably not available
- please join the interest group on Slack: #topic-repair
Topic 5: Do-Something-Day
- We need organizers for the next do something day
- No key necessary, we will unlock you ;)
- Philipp is interested and will pick a date!
Topic 6: Meet and Code
Up to 500 € funding for workshops around programming for kids/youth in September or October - deadline for applications: Sep 13th
- minimum duration 4 h (can be split into several dates), 20 participants per event
- full requirements: conditions of participation
- Keno thinks he could find several KI tutors from his work
- Keno could also do git and Python primers for sure
- Koen has a computational modeling workshop in mind
- further ideas welcome! Let's discuss everything and write applications for several worthwhile concepts :-)
