"Upcycling" is a way of reducing waste by turning it into something different and usually more valuable, e.g. furniture or artwork. While many upcycling ideas are interesting ways to prolong a product's life before it ends up in the trash, be aware that this trend - as many others - has some critical side effects when promoted blindly and many artists are making their materials much less recyclable than they were before...
