Cutting mats are useful when carrying out knifework, e.g. with scalpels, to protect the tabletops. They have a self-healing polymer inside, so cuts with a scalpel or a sharp knife will vanish quickly. Also you can't cut through them accidentally as they have a thin sheet of hard plastic inside.
Nevertheless they have to be replaced at some point after extended usage.
We currently have a very big one that is meant for cutting fabrics so make sure you don't get it dirty.
