Adhesive tapes consist of some kind of backing covered with an adhesive on at least one side.

A good idea before applying any kind of adhesive tape to a smooth surface is to remove any dust and fat, e.g. by wiping it with a few drops of acetone.

Synonyms: outdoor tape; DE: Allwetter-Klebeband,
witterungsbeständiges Klebeband
Suggested Tools:

This tape is not perfectly clear but a lot more transparent than it seems when you look at the entire roll. It is pretty thick and can withstand UV radiation and very low or high temperatures better than other kinds of adhesive tape.

Synonyms: double-sided tape, two-way tape;
DE: doppelseitiges Klebeband,
Doppelklebeband, Verlegeband
Suggested Tools: shop scissors

Double sided tape consists almost entirely of adhesive and should therefore only be cut with cheap shop scissors. They still need to be cleaned afterwards...

It can be very useful for fixing a workpiece you want to mill.

Duct Tape

Synonyms: duck tape;
DE: Gewebeband, "Panzertape"
On Site? some

Location: wood workshop
Suggested Tools: hands

Duct tape (from "duck tape" after the type of sturdy fabric) is a reinforced tape with excellent adhesion and stability properties on many materials. You can tear it by hand, and even though that is harder than with many other tapes scissors should not be used as they would get clogged with adhesive.

The very similar "gaffer tape" is mainly made from fabric instead of artificial polymers and features an adhesive that is more easily removable.

On Site? yes
Suggested Donation: 2.50 €/roll

Suggested Tools: markers, hands

Masking tape is commonly used for protecting corners or small surfaces when painting or to label things as it is cheap and easily removable without traces. You can easily tear it by hand.

Synonyms: packaging tape; DE: Packband
Suggested Tools: shop scissors, scalpels

Packing tape may seem brown and ugly at first glance, but can be used for awesome semi-transparent pieces of art!

Synonyms: "Kapton tape";
DE: Polyimid-Klebeband

Suggested Donation: 15 €/roll
Location: electronics room
Suggested Tools: shop scissors

Polyimide tape (commonly called "Kapton" after a brand name) is a very thin insulating tape. It is commonly used on 3D printers with glass or aluminum beds (not our Original Prusa i3 MK2S!) to increase print bed adhesion as it is heat resistant and common printing materials seem to stick to it rather well when it is warm.
