Thread is a very thin kind of yarn that is most commonly used for sewing. There are different kinds of thread like sewing thread, embroidery thread and basting cotton (DE: Heftgarn) depending on the purpose.

The term thread also refers to the "twist" of fasteners like screws, nuts and of course threaded rods that can be cut with taps and dies.
