Stone

Synonyms: brick, rock, masonry; DE: Stein, Fels, Ziegel
Suggested Tools: masonry drill bits,
disc grinder (with proper disc!)
laser cutter

Of course there is way more to "stone" than this tiny page, but it's something we haven't really worked with a lot.

Engraving

engravings might turn out light or dark

Many kinds of stone can be laser engraved! There will certainly be differences between some minerals, but it seems most yield a lightly colored engraving. Test with a similar stone if you can!

The laser creates very fine stone dust which can be harmful to you and the machine. Make sure suction and the "air assist" compressor are working properly.

To let the engraving pop on any [citation needed] kind of stone, go for a "wet look" by applying wax or clear lacquer.

colorless paraffin wax is very easy to get and much "cleaner" than lacquer!

Suitable Types

Slate (Schiefer) is particularly popular due to the high contrast you can achieve. Have you tried other reproducible materials? You don't need to be a geologist to help the next person (who also might not be one), but "some rock I found" is not really enough ;-)

  • red granite - light engraving which benefits from the wet look trick
  • red clay bricks?
  • concrete plate/bricks?
