A headset press tool is a specialized bicycle mechanic tool used to press the upper and lower bearing cups evenly and securely into a bicycle's head tube. It prevents frame damage that can occur when using improper methods like a hammer.
How it Works
The tool operates like a giant clamp or heavy-duty bolt:
- The Spindle: A long threaded rod goes through the frame's head tube.
- The Handles/Nuts: Handles or large nuts on either end are tightened, drawing the two ends closer together.
- The Press Plates/Drifts: Specially sized adapters (called "drifts" or "cones") sit against the headset cups and perfectly center them in the frame while applying equal pressure.
When and Why it is Used
- For press-fit headsets: Crucial for installing External Cup (EC) and Zero Stack (ZS) headsets, where the metal bearing cups are a tight friction-fit inside the frame.
- For integrated headsets: Modern frames with Integrated (IS) headsets drop the bearings directly into molded recesses in the frame, making a press tool
