Edge banding can give a decorative and more durable edge to certain engineered woods. It is sold in various colors/patterns and widths.
For small-scale applications you can get by with a flatiron to stick it down (there is hot-melt glue on the back) and a box cutter or router to trim the corners, but professionals would use handheld or even stationary machines for the job.
