Glued laminated timber is made up of massive wooden boards to create panels that are much wider or beams that are much longer than you could get from the tree without such tricks. It is available from several tree species, softwoods like pine being very cheap.

Check out how to edge join lumber yourself - for example, combining different species of wood can be very decorative and you won't find such special panels in the hardware store!
