Threaded inserts can give you a metric thread in a piece of wood that is not very visible from the outside. The mounting hole always needs to be pre-drilled and countersunk, then they can be screwed in with an appropriate screwdriver, hex key or - best of all - a metric screw coming perfectly straight from a simple installation jig like this one (Guido Henn/HolzWerken - DE).
