Shielded Metal Arc Welding

Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) is perhaps the most beginner-friendly welding technique due to its low equipment requirements and is known by many names:

• stick welding
• manual metal arc welding (MMA, MMAW)
• Lichtbogenschweißen, Lichtbogenhandschweißen, Lichtbogenschmelzschweißen
• Elektrodenschweißen, Elektroschweißen

The high current needed for SMAW is usually supplied by a welding transformer or an inverter.
