WD-40 stands for something like "Water Displacement formula 40" and is a common workshop helper, e.g. to remove rust and to loosen stuck metal parts. It is only part lubricant - the other part is a volatile solvent - and there are many cases where you should not use it (e.g. to "oil" your bike chain)!
