The goal was building a 2m wide bed frame quickly and without spending much on the wood, giving some extra budget for errors.

Metal fittings

All four sides are connected to the bedposts using Knapp DUO 62/15. There is a great video (in German) on these connectors: "Starke Verbinder für den Bau von Betten". Once the distancing screw is tuned to the optimal gap, they don´t require any tools to assemble or disassemble the sides from the bed posts. While they are not the cheapest option, they are a great option for strong hidden connectors.

The mid beam is removable without tools as well, using this fitting.

Considerations

  • The screws for the DUO on the bedpost are 40mm long, using a thin bedpost you need to place the perpendicular connector on the same post at a different height to prevent the screws hitting each other. This different height is required on the respective side piece as well.
  • Resist the temptation to buy side pieces exactly 2m long. To get a clean edge, you need some extra that can be cut off.
  • Don´t buy cheap pre-planed boards. Their cupping will make it hard to place the connectors properly (and look bad).
  • Sand the end grain (for example on the top of the bed posts) to a fine grit size, this will prevent it to soak up too much coloring.
