We have a simple wood lathe in the wood workshop that we can use as an entry to woodturning - if a community of turning enthusiasts develops and the machine becomes too weak for more ambitious projects, we'll have to think about replacing it with a professional model.

Specs

  • max. workpiece diameter: 320 mm
  • max. workpiece length: 1000 mm
  • spindle speeds: 850 - 1250 - 1750 - 2510 rpm
  • motor: 370 W
  • spindle thread: M18
  • workholding options: drive center (Vielzack-Stirnmitnehmer/"Dornenkrone"), four-jaw chuck, faceplate

Belt Tensioning

The lathe can run at various speeds depending on which pulleys are connected by the belt (picture on the housing). Do not put excessive tension on the belt - you'll be very happy about the belt slipping in case you've made a mistake and the tool digs into the workpiece!

Upgrades/Improvements

We should soon tweak this machine to improve usability:

  • replace pulley adjustment and casing screws by thumbwheels or so
  • add a clamping lever to the tool rest's nut
  • buy (or turn on the metal lathe) an 18 to 33 mm adapter (to match common accessories like faceplates)
  • buy (or make) a faceplate Micha brought in enough accessories for the start :-)
