Idea/Overview: Plenum

Date/Time: 2019-4-10, 20:00
Attending Managers: Lukas, Patrick
Attending Members: Kim, Henrik, Luca, Sebastian, Johannes, Korbi, User, Martin, Emanual, Georg, Ed

Topics

Here's the list so far - please don't hesitate to add more! If you won't be able to attend, you can add your comments here or in the discussion to take part anyway :-)

Project Presentations

Let's take about 2 × 20 minutes before each plenum to show others what we're working on! If you are interested in talking about your projects, please announce it here and/or via the Mailing List:

Recap of the last plenum

  • Members Wall?
    • Lukas: should have a sign naming it "Members Wall" so that one could find the wiki page, and perhaps an "example" entry that invites everyone to add themselves
  • news on Ciaran's "project focused event to collect showcase projects (e.g. for PR)"?

RNZ 2019-4-17

The newspaper will come to write about our Space next Wednesday! It would be great to have many motivated members there at 18:00 who don't mind to talk to the journalist or pose for the photographer ;-)

Thanks to one of our newest members, Birgitt, for hooking us up with her connections!

If anyone else knows someone working at a newspaper please let them know about us!

Bahnstadtfest

See GitHub Issue #110

We had a good time at the Bahnstadtfest last year (and also on the way there), now it's coming up again: Saturday, July 20

Main goals:

  • visibility
  • possible new members
  • show off what can be done

Last years projects:

  • Luzians hot wire cutter

Possible projects to show off:

  • Small wooden lathe
  • various games

Additional:

  • have a open day close to the Bahnstadtfest for people to come by afterwards
    • school/semester holidays start the week after
  • there will be power available
    • maybe also 3-phase for the plastic shredder

It would be nice to organize a stand again, but we'll need volunteers! Who would like to help out with any or all of these tasks?

  • preparation/planning of exhibits and activities in advance
  • transportation/setting up the stand in the morning
  • presentation/talking to visitors during the day and getting them excited about Making and our Space
  • helping out with the overall event: two volunteers for the run in the afternoon and two for food stands in the afternoon/early evening
  • transportation/cleaning up in the evening

If we get enough interest, Lukas would confirm with the organizers and open an issue for detailed planning.

Laser Cutter

We will very soon be "between lasers" again - the loaned machine is leaving us, we should discuss the next options!

Please add to this list if you already know something, we will then go over it together:

  • loan the "Wanderlaser" from cameo/Verbund offener Werkstätten
    • nearly identical to the last one, so we'd be quick to commission it
    • limited to just six weeks, costs something like 450 € plus transportation
  • buy a machine of our own - will be much more expensive, but we'd have it "forever". Also it would allow us to reduce the usage cost (instead of 50cent/min)
    • Mr. Beam
      • diode-powered (5 W) - not much cutting ability but nice for engraving
        • advertised as a desktop engraver
      • the current model II costs about 3000 € (plus 600 for the air filter)
      • we might be able to get a used one for less
        • need checking of it is the V2 (V1 is not certified)
    • FabCreator FabCore (40 W) or FabPro (100 W)
      • "coming soon summer 2019", no pricing published yet.
Martin:On the make Munich they indicated the fabcore to cost around 3500€ (without tax iirc). There is a flyer in the office. It sounded like a really nice concept and an awesome company. I would definitely prefer this over the Mr Beam!
      • Old model was difficult to work with due to the assembly someone with a "Laser safety intro" needs to check the device and vouch for its safety
    • Hendrik has a very small diode laser engraver at home
    • Alternative funding through some sponsorship
      • Propose a project to one of the bigger manufacturers where a laser would be needed
      • Needs a value proposition for the manufacturer (e.g. have their name on the project or similar)
  • DIY options have the problem of safety as we are a public space
    • people want a plasma cutter...

The majority of the attending members would be interested in laser cutter

New (and newly available) tools at the space

  • Lukas donated a bunch of small pliers (combination, diagonal, needle-nose) so there is more redundancy in each workshop
  • still several tools in commissioning that just need a very little bit of final effort before they're done!
  • Martin donated two new brooms for the non-workshop rooms
  • We got a free photo tripod that somebody left in the back...
  • Regarding new tools talk (Commissioning etx.) to Patrick

=> also see "Wish List"

Patrick presented the idea to have a top 5 of things that are needed the most and should be bought once the money for them is available. This list should be discussed and checked every plenum. The suggestions should come with a concrete item (e.g. cordless drill XY from YZ for ---€) or at least with a defined price range. This can also

Suggestions for the Top 5

  • A (good) set of wood drills (Martin)
    • Martin wants to get some with energy class A...
    • Martin did some impulse shopping and bought them already during the plenum (2x)
  • new cordless drill (Lukas)
    • the current one is dying
  • a good drill press (Johannes)
  • jointer/planer (Sebastian, Lukas?)
  • new chopsaw (the current one is quite sketchy) (Martin)
  • Dust filter for the woodshop (Lukas)
    • 200-300€
  • Fume filter for soldering in the electronics room
  • new router for the table router

Apply for public funding:

  • form teams for specific grants and write them
  • some holiday program for kids can bring a lot of funding
  • Donations from the university
    • 'deinvenarization'

Collaboration possibilities

Who's not in our Mailing List or Telegram Group yet? Also check out!

Current projects that are looking for collaborators

  • Luzian's open scan

Issues

closed issues since the last plenum
new issues since the last plenum

Do-something days

Any plans for a "do-something day" in the next few weeks?

Area Patron Update

Area Patron Update Members Feedback
Electronics Bench Johannes any update? any feedback/thanks?
3D Printer Farm Luca any update? Question: Is there any update on Issue 93?

Who else would like to become an Area Patron (Eckpate)?

Seminar Ideas

In the January Plenum, we decided that we would like to have at least one seminar per month. This worked out in the first three months, but so far, nothing more has been organized.
We should plan the next months.

Ideas can be found on Seminar Ideas. But maybe the Plenum has other ideas or somebody in the Plenum wants to create an additional Seminar!

open discussion (general improvements, etc.)

What did I do since the last plenum?

What am I planning to do until the next plenum?

What went wrong?

  • The SD-Card Reader for the 3D Printers disappeared. Apparently, this was noticed during the weekend by Luca and Sbillaudelle during the weekend of March 23rd and 24th. However, no issue was opened and nothing was sent through the ML.

What went well?

  • Johannes and Martin became volunteer supervisors and hosted some "making hours"! Who else would be interested? "Specialized" events are also welcome :-)

What should get done at the space (new issues)?

After the first six months, we have gotten 36.97 € through Amazon Smile. Not a lot, but also not too bad - there were probably just not too many participants yet! How about we spend this money on something symbolic that can be used to make more members aware of the option to "donate" through Smile? Something that's often used would be nice, we could then put "bought with Amazon Smile donations [QR-Code]" directly on it.

Suggestions:

  • Lukas: another cordless drill
    • if we can't afford a good one, maybe the next round of Smile money makes it possible?
    • alternatively, there are often some greatly reduced demo tools available at Bauhaus if we think the batteries survived the demo period well enough
  • Martin: A set of wood drill bits
  • any other ideas?

Next Meeting

a Friday in May - 2019-5-3 or 2019-5-10?
