There are various types of solder available; most common are the 60/40 (Sn/Pb) and the lead free ones. These come in different diameters depending on the usage. Usually the thinner the solder, the easier it is to solder small components. Another important aspect is the flux which is found in the solder wire. It helps to melt the solder and reduces its surrounding chemically in a redox reaction to avoid the formation of oxide.

Most solder types work fine when handled properly and in the end it comes down to personal preference.
