The goal was building a 2m wide bed frame quickly and without spending much on the wood, giving some extra budget for errors.

Metal fittings
All four sides are connected to the bedposts using Knapp DUO 62/15. There is a great video (in German) on these connectors: "Starke Verbinder für den Bau von Betten". Once the distancing screw is tuned to the optimal gap, they don´t require any tools to assemble or disassemble the sides from the bed posts. While they are not the cheapest option, they are a great option for strong hidden connectors.

The mid beam is removable without tools as well, using this fitting.

Considerations
* The screws for the DUO on the bedpost are 40mm long, using a thin bedpost you need to place the perpendicular connector on the same post at a different height to prevent the screws hitting each other. This different height is required on the respective side piece as well.
* Resist the temptation to buy side pieces exactly 2m long. To get a clean edge, you need some extra that can be cut off.
* Don´t buy cheap pre-planed boards. Their cupping will make it hard to place the connectors properly (and look bad).
* Sand the end grain (for example on the top of the bed posts) to a fine grit size, this will prevent it to soak up too much coloring.

Topic 1: Airbrush Corner
* Björn & Ciaran collecting donations for an Airbrush and Art-Corner on Betterplace
* Betterplace is our internet platform for donations: https://www.betterplace.org/en/projects/99816-verbesserung-einer-offenen-werkstatt
* Makes it easy to jointly buy tools and is in fact the preferred method

Topic 2: Welding Corner
* Notion Systems in Schwetzingen donated an exhibition stand
* We are using this for the welding corner
* We need to sort out the english plug for the ventilation
* We do not plan to stock electrodes for welding
* Should we gather donations for a plasma cutter?
** Should probably finish the welding corner first

Topic 3: Cinema Seats
* We have 6 cinema seats for the gaming corner
* Will be installed today
* Martin may clean those up

Topic 4: Maus Türöffnertag
* Every year on the third of October
* Similar to boys and girls day but for kids ~6-14 years old
* We usually offer a few places free of charge
* Marcel's idea: This year we could use precious plastics to cast plastic forms
* Use these casts to build fridge magnets
** Todo Keno: Call to Action
* We should identify cool background activities (like lasering something small)
** Or laser wood for fridge magnets

Topic 5: Tor 4
* We have not been selected this time around
* Should try again next year: 60.000 € was this year's grant money
* Updates in slack: #Tor4
* our past Tor4 event: You can make it

Topic 6: Precious Plastics
* Plastic recyling corner next to the CNC machines
* Marcel is currently pushing this project
* We are planning precious plastics evenings to move the project forward
* More info in the wiki and slack #topic-plastic-recyling
* Plastic shredder has been finished
* Marcel is testing method for melting and casting shreds
* Long term plan: create your own plastic plates for CNC machining
* Todo Keno: call to action, Post Picture

PlatformIO is an open source ecosystem for IoT development

As this quote indicates, PlatformIO provides an ecosystem which supports the development of Internet of Things (IoT) applications based on various platforms and environments.

PlatformIO supports a broad range of platforms and boards and integrates itself in Visual Studio Code as well as in Atom. For other Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), where no direct integration is available, there is the possibility to integrate PlatformIO using the Command Line Interface (CLI).

When working in the Arduino world, PlatformIO can be seen as an alternative to the Arduino IDE. However, PlatformIO is much more powerful (and in NL's opinion also more user friendly) than the Arduino IDE. This comes both from PlatformIO itself as well as from the integration into the IDEs.

Usage at the Space
We are using PlatformIO within various IoT projects. We are trying to base any new IoT development on PlatformIO.

As example projects, please see the following:
* Project: Enhanced Door Bell
* Project: Flip Dot Display

Main Advantages
Compared to the Arduino IDE, PlatformIO provides several advantages, some of which are:
* Integration in your favorite IDE
* Syntax highlighting
* Autocompletion
* Git integration
* Library Manager
* Manually set build-flags per project
* Automatic board and library downloads per project

Learning
We developed a seminar for PlatformIO in which you can learn the basics of PlatformIO.

In February 2019, we hosted the first version of our PlatformIO Seminar.

In this seminar, the participants learn the basics of PlatformIO, the differences to the Arduino IDE and how to create and flash their first programs.

Please see the following details for hosting the seminar again:

Description
Microcontroller programming with PlatformIO
You´re interested in supporting your electronics projects with a microcontroller? Maybe you even started with some development using the Arduino IDE?
Unfortunately, development with the Arduino IDE can be quite tough, since it is missing some basic features. PlatformIO provides an alternative which enables you to develop for microcontrollers using a regular IDE such as Visual Studio Code.
This Seminar is for beginners to the world of microcontroller which want to write their first program as well as for users which are already used to the Arduino IDE and are now looking for alternatives.<br/>
Please bring your Laptop. Ideally, you already have Visual Studio Code and PlatformIO installed already.

<br/>
Bitte bringe deinen Laptop mit. Idealerweise hast Du Visual Studio Code und PlatformIO bereits installiert.

Timeframe
In the first seminar, we needed approximately 2 hours, because everybody already had PlatformIO installed

Advertisment
As always, please see how to organize an event for general information. We had good experiences with hosting the seminar on Eventbrite and limiting the amount of tickets.<br/>
Please find a picture for your advertisment on GitHub

Needed Materials
You will need Microcontrollers and USB-cables for all participants. Please check the E-Bench for available ones.<br/>
The slides are targeted on ESP8266.

You can learn 3D printing in our 3D printer farm! The term "3D printing" is actually quite vague and is used to describe various technologies which are defined by currently expiring patents. We will list some common ones below as we gather more experience.

If you are new to the subject, this introductory guide by 3D Hubs is worth a read! An overview of the parts is given in this 3D printer anatomy video.

You may also find our collection of 3D printing ideas interesting. Did you know one of our printers can print several colors/materials at once?

There are two big German speaking communities: 3D-Druck-Community and the German Reprap forum (many English subforums available, too).

Fused Filament Fabrication
All of our printers work by depositing molten plastic layer upon layer, a process which is called Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) in the open source RepRap community or Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) in most commercial contexts. We support the idea of open source fabrication and therefore call it FFF in this wiki.

Limits of FFF
* no printing out of thin air
:support structures may have to be added where your model does not touch the buildplate and can be a real pain to remove...
* problems with overhangs > 45°
:printing into thin air does not work very well either. This limit can be stretched a bit by efficient cooling, though.
* nozzle size determines the maximum achievable resolution
:currently, all our printers are equipped with 0.4 mm nozzles.
I wanted to make a one-of-a-kind weddding cake stand and took inspiration from the "Lumberjack Championships", where one discipline consists of chopping a wedge out of a tree trunk, jamming a spring board in there, jumping up on the board and cutting the next wedge until the contestant reaches the top to chop that off.

Luckily, I found just the right piece of Robinia on a forest hike and used it for this project after drying it for about half a year.

Approach
After the tree trunk had dried for about half a year, I cut slots into the bottom with Japanese saws and bevel edge chisels where the feet would go. These were just simple pieces of scrap plywood to increase the footprint and make sure the stand would not tip over.

Once the feet were screwed in and adjusted to the size of the table the whole thing would be used on, I started cutting wedges out of the "tree" with the Japanese saws. Unlike after the chopping of the actual Lumberjack Championship, I ended up with a solid piece of wood after each cut that I numbered and used to hold the baltic birch plywood boards in place. An alternate (and perhaps easier) method here could have been the use of a chainsaw for a single straight cut of each board's thickness, but that was not the aesthetic I was aiming for.

The plywood boards were also numbered and a screw hole was drilled through each wedge-board pair and into the matching place in the trunk. Although everything had held up well just by wedging thus far (tested up to approx. 7 kg), it would have been so bad if one of the boards would slip with a cake on it that the screws were added to be safe.

Finally, the boards were thoroughly sanded with an eccentric sander and finished with coconut oil (and topped off with cakes after transport & assembly!)
documentation unfinished, please just ask if you have urgent questions ;-)

I made a bunch of tealight holders out of birch trunks as a wedding decoration and will now work on turning this project into a woodworking seminar for beginners.

Materials
Birch Logs
* from Bauhaus, very wet!
** better cut & dry in advance next time??
** risk of mold forming at the cut faces...

Tealights
* steel holders from <smile link>
* "eco" tealights without aluminum cases <smile link>

Making
Need to test whether this can be sped up - drilling into the wet wood was very difficult! Lots of unforeseen mold problems..

* cut with chop saw - log often too thick for the small Herkules saw...switch to bandsaw next time?
* sand cut faces with eccentric sander
* let dry - continue & seal ends immediately next time?
* drill with <specific> Forstner bit
* let dry/seal again so the bottom of the hole is protected
* insert steel holder before the log shrinks too much!

<gallery mode=packed-hover heights=150 caption="gallery">
File:birch tealights 01.JPG|the store-bought logs were very wet and quickly became moldy...
File:birch tealights 02.JPG|cutting approx. 8-10 cm long pieces with the chop saw
File:birch tealights 03.JPG|the logs were often too thick for our (then) available power saws and needed to be finished off by hand with a crosscut saw
File:birch tealights 04.JPG|a lot of mold formed again within a week after cutting...
File:birch tealights 05.JPG|we then sanded off the mold and force-dried the cut faces with a heat gun
File:birch tealights 06.JPG|after superficial heating, we applied hard wax oil in an attempt to protect the wood
File:birch tealights 07.JPG|another week of drying on my CoMaking bench with better spacing
File:birch tealights 08.JPG|there was still some new mold after all this, but it was easily sanded off by hand
File:birch tealights 09.JPG|finally, the logs were ready for drilling with a large Forstner bit
File:birch tealights 10.JPG|more drilling...good to have a drill press available!
File:birch tealights 11.JPG|after shaping, the ends were finished with coconut oil
File:birch tealights 12.JPG|make sure to insert the steel cups soon afterwards, the wood (and the hole!) will shrink as it keeps drying
Need some decoration for a wedding cake?
This is a quick project which can be finished in a day (plus time to let the paint dry).

* Find a template that has your preferred shape, scale it to the desired size and print it.
* Use some coal paper to copy the outline onto a piece of wood.
* Cut the shape with the scroll saw. A round blade is useful for tight corners, alternatively draw the two parts separately and cut off everything around them.
* Drill holes in the bottom parts in order to stick them on the cake using toothpicks.
* Sand the surface and edges.
* Paint the figures.
* Bake a cake.
* Decorate.
PlatformIO Seminar

Mitja:

<br/>

Slides
The slides are available on GitHub. Please ensure you know how to set up the code you will need.

In the October 2018 Plenum we decided to create a Members Wall in the CoMakingSpace.

The Members Wall intends to provide an overview of our members with their names and special skills.

Location
The Members Wall is located in the hallway. So when new people enter the Space, they can get to know the community which makes the CoMakingSpace awesome.

Participate
Of course, we want all members to be reflected on our members wall. In order to include your own information to the Wall, please use the template available for download on GitHub:
* Microsoft Word
* Open Document format for everything else

You do not have to include your picture. If you prefer not to put your picture into a public space, this is totally fine. In this case, feel free to include something else into the picture box or to remove it entirely.

For example, you could think about inserting a QR-Code which leads to your User Page or a picture of a project you are proud of!

Privacy Policy (sponsored by Captain Obvious):
The data you choose to publish will be publicly visible to anyone who is entering our building. Publishing it elsewhere, for example on the internet in form of a photo, requires permission by all affected individuals.

Be Creative
You do not necessarily have to print your sign on a piece of paper. If you want to show off your craftmanship skills, feel free.

For example, you could "print" it on wood with a laser cutter. You can also think about painting something yourself. Or whatever your creative mind tells you.

VisiCut provides user-friendly control of a laser cutter. It allows preparing jobs at home or keeping jobs for future runs.

Materials
VisiCut can save settings for different materials and thicknesses and we will collect tried and tested values on a material settings page once we have a cutter. You can then try successful settings from that page or import some when you install VisiCut (or at any time by clicking options -> download recommended settings).

Laser Profiles
There are four standard profiles: cutting, marking, engraving and 3D engraving. Cutting and marking are vector ("line") based while engraving and 3D engraving will work with both vector and raster (pixel grid) files.

It's important to keep in mind these are fundamentally different, i.e. setting 100 % power/100 % speed in "mark" will produce different results than the same settings for "cut". You can make adjustments to these under options -> edit laser profiles.

You select the profile(s) you need through the "mapping" menu. Among the possible identifiers for groups of lines you want to treat as one are color and thickness - so you can choose to cut everything black and engrave everything else, for example.

Cutting
The laser moves relatively slow so there is enough heat along the toolpath to completely remove the material. Results in nice and clean cuts that should not need additional sanding when used with proper settings. When there are no vectors in your file, "cut everything" will trace the bounding rectangle.

Marking
Also called "vector engraving" - faster than cutting, which results in thin lines on your workpiece but ideally not too deep into cuttable materials.

Engraving
Turns colors in more or less dense point clouds using one of several available "dithering" algorithms and burns every point with equal power - the impression of color or even structure results from the spacing. Best zoom in on a detailed area in the preview (e.g. an eye in a photo) to have a better idea of how your work may turn out with the selected algorithm and resolution.

3D Engraving
Engraves darker colors at a higher power setting than lighter ones, thereby creating a relief. It's easy to screw this up, e.g. two areas might look very different to the eye but actually have similar darkness when converted to grayscale. Nice for logos and similar artwork with clearly defined areas!

Job Order
Sometimes a job has to be split into several parts and you might be confused as to which is which, and even if everything is saved as one job cutting may accidentally be carried out before engraving. Make sure to order the different steps in the desired way when mapping (the higher the earlier) to prevent such mishaps!

Parametric SVG
Besides the standard SVG file format, VisiCut introduces the so-called "Parametric SVG" format which allows for changeable designs from within VisiCut. This may be useful, for instance, if you want to design a box which can be cut from various material thicknesses.

The file format adds some parameters to the SVG header which don't interfere with the actual file, thereby allowing it to be opened by other programs. For full documentation, visit the Visicut wiki on github and look at the example files directly in VisiCut (File > Examples > predefined > parametric).

Further Reading/Help
For detailed information, read the Bachelor's thesis on VisiCut.

Most microcontrollers use the serial protocol to communicate with other device and/or get flashed.

If you want to use a computer in order to communicate with a microcontroller, you will need a USB-Serial adapter. While these are often available on the board already (in case you use the development boards), you might have the need to use one of the specific USB-Serial Converters.
The PL2303 is a cheap chip which is the base for many USB-Serial Converters. We have some available in the CoMakingSpace which you can use for temporary projects.

The ones we have are based on the PL-2303 XA/HXA chip. Unfortunately, the latest official drivers do not support Windows 10 anymore (see here).

However, somebody uploaded an old driver version to a wordpress blog, which makes the chips work on Windows 10. Of course, use this at your own risk.
The cheap USB serial module CH340 is not supported by default in older versions of Windows. Latest Windows should support CH340 out of the box.
Otherwise you need to install the drivers manually.
Organizing an event can be quite some work. Therefore, any help you can provide to the managers will be appreciated. <br/>
* In German and English if your event will be bilingual:
# Title of your event
# Description of your event (written like if you would talk to a person attending)
# Prerequisites (e.g. a Laptop)

PL2303
{{ToolInfoBox
|tool name=PL2303 USB Serial Converter
The PL2303 is a cheap chip which is the base for many USB-Serial Converters. We have some available in the CoMakingSpace which you can use for temporary projects.

The ones we have are based on the PL-2303 XA/HXA chip. Unfortunately, the latest official drivers do not support Windows 10 anymore (see here).

However, somebody uploaded an old driver version to a wordpress blog, which makes the chips work on Windows 10. Of course, use this at your own risk.

<br clear="all"/>

CH340
{{ToolInfoBox
|tool name=CH340 USB Serial Converter
|image=

Windows
The cheap USB serial module CH340 is not supported by default in Windows. You need to install the drivers manually.

Mac
<pre>brew cask install homebrew/cask-drivers/wch-ch34x-usb-serial-driver</pre>
