Foil Blocking / Foiling / Heiß Folie Prägung but *make it D.I.Y*
Normally done with foil, heat and pressure. An image plate is machined into a metal plate and then heated and pressed into the piece with the foil inbetween the plate and the paper or substrate. You can get specialed machienes to do this process. It is ofetn seen in leather working, book binding and letterpress.
How Does Crafting with Foil Work?
I saw a couple of instagram reels showing the results and did a bit of research. I watched a few youtube videos LIKE THIS ONE and also found THIS ARTICLE.

I have used 'Reactive tranfer foil'/ (Digital/ toner foils)(Sleeking Foils), becuase I didnt want to spend a lot of money on somewhat speacilized equipment/ chemical/ adhesives. This type of foil can react with printer toner/ UV digital inks and varnishes, and when I figured out that the space already had a Laser printer and a laminator it made this fun craft more accessible.

I bought THIS foil multipack on amazon that seems to work okay, at least in the first test or two. Which you can see for yourself in the picture and video below.

Process
<big>Process pictures are in the works, check back soon :) </big><big> </big>

<big>1. Getting your design ready </big>
The nice thing about this method is that you dont need to have any specific design software to create the files for your projects, but they do make it a little easier (If you have access and know how to use them or can put the time into learning them).

For the first test I used the 'Members wall' poster template because I had not yet made one. This is a word file that I edited and printed it directly from word when I was finished.

<big>2. Printing </big>
You will see from your own research that any random printer might not work for this process. It needs to be specifically a laser printer (I have read that some laser inks/toners may not work, but what we have in the space currenlty seems to be just fine).

To print the deigns you first need to be connected to the printer, instructions for doing that can be found on the PRINTER PAGE on the WIKI. The Canon Printer that is now in the Space works wonderfully for this process

Once connected, ensure that you are printing in Black and White. The foil will really only stick to the Black printed area of your design.

<big>3. Foiling </big>
Turn on the laminator and allow it to come up to temperature. The instructions for the laminator in the space can be found HERE.

Once the design has been printed, cut a piece of foil to a size that just covers the printed deign. Then lay the foil, shiny side up, onto the printed deign. You can in theory run this through the laminator now, or you can place a sheet of blank paper under your work piece and over top of the foil and work piece.

Layers being; Blank paper - work piece - foil - blank paper.

Now pass the materials through the laminator. (With the laminator at the space you should start to feed the materials from the 'back' side with the power switch on the left facing towards you. there is also an arrow drawn on the device for direction of feed)

<big>4. Next steps</big>
The satisfying part, as seen in the video above, peel the foil and you are done. If your material was already the finished size you need then yes you are done, otherwise use whatever method you prefer to cut project down to final size.

Further steps depending on the project and requirements can involve actually laminating the project in plastic or putting it in a protective sleeve.

Multi colour foiling/ Overprinting images
The process is almost the same as written above, however some minor changes need to be made. You need to foil you can spilt your design up into multiple 'layers' or stages/ Pages.

Take the V2 of my members wall picture for example;
This was a 2 page PDF, the pages were the same size.
The first page was all of the area I wanted the blue foil to be.
The second page was the image that I wanted.

* Print the 1st Page then foil it.
* Put the same sheet back into the printer and print the 2nd Page/ foil the second colour.
* and so on for as many layers as your design requires

**You need to know which orientation to place it back into the printer tray for this to work but a quick test makes this easy.**

I have used 'Reactive tranfer foil'/ (Digital/ toner foils), becuase I didnt want to spend a lot of money on somewhat speacilized equipment/ chemical/ adhesives.

Take the V2 of my members wall picture for example;

How Does Crafting with Foil Work?
I saw a couple of instagram reels showing the results and did a bit of research. I watched a few youtube videos LIKE THIS ONE and also found THIS ARTICLE.

I have used 'Reactive tranfer foil'/ (Digital/ toner foils), becuase I didnt want to spend a lot of money on somewhat speacilized equipment/ chemical/ adhesives.

(I did have some issues with this and needed to use the printer and port names to find it and then select the correct driver from a long list.)

(With the laminator at the space you should start to feed the materials from the 'back' side with the power switch on the left facing towards you.)

Multi colour foiling
The process is almost the same as written above, however some minor changes need to be made. Depending on the size of the area that you need to foil you can spilt your design up into multiple 'layers' or stages.
Design, creation and use.
*UPDATE* I got "off-cuts" of furniture grade vinyl(moebel-folie) from work to wrap the individual panels becasue the press on edgebanding was really starting to fail and breakoff.
I think it look a lot better this way :)

If I were to do it again (and not have material to "upcycle") I would go to Hornbach with dimensions for the panels that are needed,
and have them cut and edge band (Kanten-Umleimung) all of the pieces instead of using the press on stuff that I found.
This is because, while the "raw wood" core of the board is hidden, the edges of the banding are quite sharp and
if I sand them you would see the core of the sheet again.
I joined the space in September 2023 to meet new people and learn from them, as well as to scratch the Making itch, since I had to leave my small shed workshop in Ireland.

A lot of my projects start and take a lot longer than expected becasue I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I learn a lot and then eventually (kind of) finish the project.

I have a background in all things crafts, making and design, and hope to be able to learn from others and share the limited knowledege that I have aswell.

Projects
The projects I take on will be very varied. It could be anything from furniture and decoration for my new apartment or projects to try something I have never done before (almost everything).

I will often mix areas and interests, so some of the things I post might not just be making. Some projects might be only design, some might be baking or cooking related. I don't really know, but we will find out :)

Almost everything I post will just be for inspiration.

If you choose to try something for yourself, I will be happy to talk to you about my experience, but I am in no way an expert at anything and this should be well understood.

This is the content required for an introduction to our CNC router - reading this does NOT replace the mandatory session with a tutor! It will make it a lot quicker though ;-)

If you need this introduction, please reach out to the following tutor(s): Johannes, Martin, Patrick, Luzian, Leo

Before you get this introduction, make sure you have the Handheld Router Introduction, this will help you understand the machine much better and is required before using it.

Let's begin! First off, make sure you have read the machine's manual, if available (check its "InfoBox" in the wiki for instructions how to find it).
Safety
* make sure the router can not be turned on accidentally when changing a bit or touching the chuck for any other reason
* insert your mill as far as you can afford for maximum strength
Suggested Reading
Besides these safety notes, you should read about the different end mills (and router bits, if you want to try those) to know what you're doing! Different materials usually require different mills, and the feedrate depends on the mill as well as the type of material.

Demonstration
The tutor will show you these steps in detail:
# at the machine
#* selecting the right bit
#* inserting a bit
#* homing the machine (setting absolute "0" positions)
#* setting the relative "0" position on your workpiece
#** paper trick: go down until a piece of paper is just held in place by the mill's tip
#* connecting, starting a job, and turning on the spindle
# on a computer
#* importing the machine setup
#* generating G-code from a design in Fusion 360 or FreeCAD
#* Accessing the web interface

You should then be able to do a small practice cut together with the tutor.

Interfacing with the CNC Router
General
The Workbee CNC is running RepRapFirmware. You can access its Web Interface via the local network on http://comakingcnc.fritz.box/.
If you don't have a device handy, the tablet on the control panel can also be used.
There, you can jog the machine, upload and start jobs, manage configuration and more.
In any case, if you want to start a job with the CNC router, you have to execute these steps: <br />
# Insert your desired bit into the router
# Turn on the CNC via the power strip switch on the electronics panel
# Make sure the emergency stop is not pushed
# Access the web interface.
# Home all axis
# Use the manual controls to bring the machine to the X/Y origin of your workpiece.
# Use the manual control to bring the machine to the Z Origin of your job <br /> ATTENTION: Nothing prevents you from driving "into" the spoilboard or your workpiece now. So make sure you move carefully and slowly!
# Set Work XYZ
# Move the router up a bit on the Z-axis
# Check the Router RPM
# Start your job
# After Homing, press the Spindle Start button
# Carefully watch your job. Use the Shop Vacs to get rid of dust during your job. <br /> If anything goes wrong, push the emergency stop!
# Once your job is done, turn off the router, home the machine and clean up.

On G-Code Senders
You used to need extra G-Code Sender software to operate the old version of the WorkBee.
That was a limitation of the GRBL Firmware. We are now running [RRF](https://www.reprapfirmware.org/) and all machine control is done through the web interface.
**When I am at the space come say Hi
</div>

Summary of me
Bist du Neu? Sorry, Are you new here?

Yes, I am new here! New to the CoMakingSpace and to Germany as well.

I have used 'Reactive tranfer foil', becuase I didnt want to spend a lot of money on somewhat speacilized equipment/ chemical/ adhesives. This type of foil can react with laser printer toner, and when I figured out that the space already had a Laser printer and a laminator it made this fun craft more accessible.

(I did have some issues with this and needed to use the printer and port names to find it and then select the correct driver from a long list.)

(With the laminator at the space you should start to feed the materials from the 'back' side with the power switch on the left facing towards you.)

Multi colour foiling
The process is almost the same as written above, however some minor changes need to be made. Depending on the size of the area that you need to foil you can spilt your design up into multiple 'layers' or stages.

* Print the 1st stage then foil it.
* Put the same sheet back into the printer and print the 2nd stage and foil it,
* and so on for as many layers as you need.

**You need to know which orientation to place it back into the printer tray for this to work but a quick test makes this more favourable than the next method.**

Which is to print the full design and try to place lots of small pieces of different coloured foil at the same time. The foil is really thin and can be a pain to work with/ handle as you want to keep it smooth for the best results.

Summary of me
Bist du Neu? Sorry, Are you new here?

Yes, I am new here! New to the CoMakingSpace and to Germany as well.

Summary of me
Bist du Neu? Sorry, Are you new here?

Yes, I am new here! New to the CoMakingSpace and to Germany as well.
